Jeel al Amal
To all friends of Jeel al Amal
On September 5th Jeel al Amal Society held a festive dinner for fundraising, to pay the outstanding bills and salaries of employees. The result was beyond expectations. The 160 participants each paid US $ 50 and bought tickets for the raffle including several prizes offered by local entrepreneurs and institutions.
Dignitaries from Jerusalem attended the “iftar”. Atallah Hanna, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch. The Lutheran bishop Munib Younan sat to his right, the Palesstinian governor of East-Jerusalem, Adnan Hussein, was on his left. Their presence is a symbol of the brotherly and closely knit relationship between Muslims and Christians amongst the Palestinians.

Dr. Khader Rajabi, acting chairman of the Jeel al Amal Society, welcomed the guests. He briefly outlined Jeel al Amal Society´s main objectives, gave insightful remarks concerning the difficult economic circumstances and encouraged the people to give donations for charity, to care for the orphans and other children at the school.
Later, the undersigned gave a presentation on the history of Jeel al Amal. It was emotional for many members of the Sahhar family, because their deceased parents, Alice and Basil Sahhar, did establish Jeel al Amal. I did repeat the words my mother always used when visitors inquired about the religion of the children: “In what language does a child cry?” In that way she condemned this form of discrimination.
Then Zahra Khalidi, director for fundraising, explained the new child sponsorship program. Then an lottery was held The first prize was a night for a family of four persons in the Jericho Resort. The winner very generously offered the prize and it was auctioned. This brought in 600 Israeli Shekels (= €110). A vocal group from Nazareth gave a very good performance for the participants of the “iftar”. At the end of the evening they got a deserved standing ovation.
Friends and family of Jeel al Amal enjoyed the positive entertaining and warm atmosphere together. This is encouraging for the readiness to offer with love for others. We hope that this will become an annual event.
