Oasis on bare rock
Jeel al Amal is located on the eastern outskirts of the Palestinian town of Bethany, which is situated east of Jerusalem, at the edge of the Desert of Judah. On bare rock bottom this oasis was established. Here, children who lost their families, have found a shelter full of hope for a good future.
1972 till 2008: Alice and Basil Sahhar
Jeel al Amal was founded in 1972 by Alice and Basil Sahhar. Basil was a born teacher with modern educational views. He worked hard in order to ensure that these children would grow up into free and independent individuals. He died on October 16th 1987. Alice, a social worker, has witnessed the horrors of life as a refugee. Therefore, all her life she fought for a world where children would no longer have to cry from fear, hunger or thirst. In 2002 Alice declared: “The Education Department of the Palestinian Authority and Social Welfare have both stated that Jeel al Amal is one of the finest schools in the area. The school has 400 pupils, of which 140 are residents of the boys home. Everything is in full swing. Not a single day of classes has been lost.” Alice remained the driving force behind Jeel al Amal until her death on October 2nd 2008.
2008 -2009: Revival
The spirit of Alice and Basil lives on in their six children, who have pledged a revival. They have inspired the 33 employees and the General Assembly, some 35 people from institutions and organizations in Jerusalem and Bethany. A rejuvenated board has appointed Zahra Khalidi as Director of fundraising to follow up contact with the friends of Jeel al Amal and, of course, to raise funds. This is an enormous task. Consider the fixed costs, the maintenance of buildings and materials, not to mention realization of dreams that have not been achieved.
2009-2010: Bursting with vitality
* Lots of new initiatives have been taken. A tradition is developing to organise fundraising diners at Muslim and Christian feast-days. Of course to raise money but also to create awareness for Jeel al Amal within the Palestinian community.
* At an open door day lots of people are witness of what Jeel al Amal has to offer to the children.
* The financial basis has become a lot more solid. There are commitments that guarantee half of the fixed costs for a period of three years.
* There is a proposal to realise a fourth floor on top of the school building.
* The library has been extended. The music classroom was redecorated. And the dining room was enlarged and fitted with new furniture.
* Large parts of the house and the school received a paint job. It all looks bright and cheerful.
* Due to personal circumstances Zahra has ended her involvement with Jeel al Amal. Much of what she has started will continue to grow.
* So Jeel al Amal is bursting with vitality. Thanks to the help of lots of people.
* Up and onwards to our 40th anniversary in 2012!
In the shadow of Jerusalem
In 1972 the seeds were sown. Up to this day something beautiful grows beyond the turmoil of war, in the silence of the desert, in the shadow of Jerusalem, giving hope to people without a future.
