Boys home and co-ed school
“Jeel al Amal” in Arabic means: “Generation of Hope”. It is the name of a boys home accommo-dating 100 Palestinian orphan boys. They are educated at the Jeel al Amal Primary co-ed school, together with 250 girls and boys of poor Palestinians in the neighbourhood. Jeel al Amal is located in Bethany, east of Jerusalem.
Driving force
Jeel al Amal was founded in 1972 by Alice and Basil Sahhar. Alice, a social worker, dedicated herself to help orphans and children of broken families. Her husband Basil, a teacher by nature, was convinced that good education is the best way to prepare children for the future. Since Basil and Alice passed away, their children are now the driving force behind Jeel al Amal.

Colours of a dream
A few days before his death, Basil had a dream. “Alice, I saw you walking, surrounded by red roses in a large piece of green land”. This image aptly reflects the soul of this unique project, even after Alice’s death. Using these festive red and green colours this website keeps you informed, how this dream becomes reality in the ups and downs of the children and of Jeel al Amal.
